How the board works

Every level that runs on a clock records a speed when you clear it. The board takes your single fastest of those and ranks it against everyone else who has opted in. Total distance breaks a tie, because two people can reach the same peak speed on different amounts of work.

The placement levels that open each unit deliberately never appear. They have no timer and no score — their whole job is that you stop looking at your hands — so a speed recorded against one would be meaningless, and including them would fill the board with zeroes.

Why you are not on it unless you said so

Publishing a name and a performance figure to the open internet is a different thing from storing them for you, and it needs asking first rather than an opt-out somebody has to find. Accounts are created with the board switched off. Nothing about you appears here until you turn it on in Settings, and turning it off takes you out again.

The name is generated, not chosen. That is partly privacy — a name derived from your email would let anybody with a list of addresses test which of them play here — and partly that a box where people type their own public name is a moderation problem this site has no way to staff.

Why the scores are not verified

KeySlice stores your progress as a compressed block that the server writes and reads back without ever opening. That is a deliberate design: it is why your keystrokes are not something the site can read. The trade is that the server has no way to tell whether a score it receives came from real typing, because it cannot see what was typed or how long it took.

Obvious nonsense is refused — a negative distance, a speed no human has ever sustained — but that catches corrupted data, not somebody determined to send a number. This is stated here rather than quietly hoped for, because a board that implied it was policed would be claiming something the design cannot deliver.

Most of the site has nothing to do with this page. The lesson ladder tracks your own progress whether or not you have an account, and the guide is the method itself. The board is a view of the room, not the point of the room.

Common questions

How do I appear on the leaderboard?

You have to ask to. Signing up asks you once, right after you create the account, and you can say no; you can also join or leave at any time from the settings page. Nobody is listed by default, leaving removes you immediately, and the board only ever reads accounts that opted in.

What name is shown?

A name the site generates for you, like "Quiet Otter". It is drawn at random and is never built from your email address or your account id, because a name derived from your address would let anyone holding a list of addresses work out which of them play here. You cannot choose it, which also means nobody has to moderate what people would otherwise type in.

How is the board ordered?

By your single fastest level, in words per minute, then by total distance as a tiebreak. Only levels that record a speed count: the placement levels that open each unit have no timer and no speed, so they never appear here.

Are the scores verified?

No, and it is worth being straight about that. Your progress is stored as an encrypted-looking block the server never opens, which is what keeps the site from reading what you type — and the cost of that design is that the server also cannot check a score. It sees a number your browser sent and stores the best one. Treat the board as a rough sense of the room rather than a competitive ranking.

Does premium give a better position?

No. Premium shows a small mark beside a name and changes nothing about the ordering, which reads scores and nothing else. Paying for rank would make the board meaningless and there is no version of this where that gets added.

Can I be removed?

Yes, two ways. Turning the toggle off in Settings drops you from the board on the next load. Deleting your account removes the underlying scores entirely, along with everything else stored for you.
